Falmouth Group Aims to Solve Homeless Issue

AFFORDABLE HOUSINGFALMOUTH – A group of Falmouth residents and advocates met this week to discuss ideas to solve the town’s homeless population ahead of the winter season.

The group plans to secure a house that would serve as transitional housing for the town’s homeless.

“The idea is, people come through from self-destructive behavior from living outside, they learn living skills, they get cleaned up and they can move towards a productive life in society,” said Paul Rifkin, group organizer and owner of the Moonakis Café in Falmouth. “The people that start off homeless end up going through the program and then administering the houses so that they can help the next batch through.”

A number of local non-profit organizations have discussed creating a proposal that would raise the necessary $450,000 needed for a down payment on a home.

The home would then be funded by donations and money from the residents.

Rifkin said they are also looking to nearby churches to open up as emergency overnight shelters.

“Representative David Vieira is organizing a bunch of faith-based groups in Falmouth to be able to take homeless people in this winter to shelter them overnight,” said Rifkin.

Rifkin is pleased with the amount of support from the community.

“The community has come together so quickly to respond to this problem and I really think we’re moving in the direction where we’re really going to be able to do something to help out this really needy situation,” said Rifkin.
