Falmouth Hospital Oncology Surgeon Receives National Award

FALMOUTH – An oncology surgeon and cancer liaison physician at Falmouth Hospital recently received national recognition from the American Cancer Society.

Dr. Peter Hopewood was one of seven individuals across the country to receive the society’s Lane W. Adams Quality of Life Award.

The award recognizes individuals who exhibit excellence and compassion in providing care for cancer patients and go beyond their professional roles to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families.

Hopewood was presented with the award at the Society’s National leadership Summit in Dallas in early February.

As a Commission on Cancer liaison physician, he works with hospitals across Massachusetts to ensure a high level of patient care, analysis of oncology data and utilization of American Cancer Society programs.

Hopewood partners with the Society on initiatives such as 80% by 2018, cancer survivorship celebrations and the creation of a cancer resource center at Falmouth Library.

He is also known for strong patient advocacy and compassionate care to patients in his clinic. Patients say Hopewood goes above and beyond to educate them regarding their diagnosis and organizes testing and clinic schedules to make sure patients receive timely information and care.
