FALMOUTH – Falmouth Selectmen have voted to support a project looking into nitrogen levels within the lower Coonamesset River.
Seven years after the funds had been approved by town meeting, the board authorized spending $30,000 to contract with the Woods Hole Research Center to monitor nitrogen removal in the lower portion of the river.
“We figuring out what the nitrogen was before and what it is afterwards and how much of the gain the town’s going to see as a result of this,” said Eric Turkington, chairman of the water quality management committee.
“It will be well worth it,” he said.
The monitoring will continue for up to 3 years and will allow the town to measure the nitrogen level both before and after the upcoming river restoration project.
