Falmouth Museums on the Green to Host Amelia Earhart Historical Re-Enactment

FALMOUTH – An opportunity to meet the ‘First Lady of the Air’ is coming to Falmouth this September.

The Falmouth Museums on the Green is hosting “Meet Amelia Earhart: First Lady of the Air” for audiences 10 and older this month.

The 45-minute program is a first-person portrayal of the pioneer aviatrix, played by Historical Character Reenactor Jessa Piaia, with an informal Q&A session to follow.

Historically known as the first woman to fly a solo across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe in 1932, Earhart also took part in the historic 1928 “Friendship” trans-Atlantic flight, which departed from East Boston Harbor.

Earhart made her mark on the fashion scene as well, designing a clothing line for “women who live actively” and a sturdy luggage line. She’s the author of three books and also worked as a social worker at the Denison House in Boston.

Piaia graduated from UMASS Boston and studied performance at the Oval House Theatre in London. After college, she went on to perform in her one-woman shows, known for using extensive research and artistry to share the accomplishments, contributions, and struggles of women in American history. During a 1994 tour spanning 11 sites across the state, Piaia portrayed Susan B. Anthony.

The event, Scheduled for September 23 at 2:00 p.m., is made possible by a grant from Mass Humanities. For reservations and information for the $15 event, call the museum at 508-548-4857. The museum is located at 55-65 Palmer Avenue in Falmouth.
