FALMOUTH – A Florida Deputy Sheriff with family in law enforcement on the Cape, was honored in a tree dedication ceremony on Thursday in Falmouth.
John Kotfila, Jr. was a Hillsborough County Florida Deputy Sheriff who was killed in a traffic crash on March 12 in Tampa, Florida.
Witnesses said that he drove his cruiser into the path of a wrong-way driver to save another motorist.
Kotfila, Jr. is the son of Massachusetts State Police Sergeant John Kotfila and the brother of Falmouth Police Officer Michael Kotfila.
“This today is a living memorial that will keep John Robert’s name alive,” said Falmouth Police Chief Ed Dunne. “To have it here at the Police Station, it really means a lot to have that here.”
The ceremony was held in front of the Falmouth Police Department.
The tree was donated by Dale Tree Service of Falmouth and a plaque at the location was donated by Clover Monument.
Dunne said that the memorial will be visible to visitors and guests in Falmouth.
“Whether you drive up Main Street or whether you’re at the police department, this tree is going to stand out as a memorial,” said Dunne.
