FALMOUTH – The Falmouth Police Department remembered all officers who have lost their lives in honor of Police Officers Memorial Day on Wednesday.
Dozens gathered at the police department for the ceremony which included placing a wreath with the department flag and memorial markers.
Falmouth Police Chief Ed Dunne thanked those who serve.
“To the men and women in blue, thank you for what you do,” he said. “To those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, we will never forget.”
During the ceremony the department also honored Falmouth Officer Samuel Pierce who died in a motorcycle accident while on duty on August 16, 1933. Family member of Pierce were in attendance.
Hillsborough (Florida) County Deputy, and Cape native, John Kotfila Jr. was also remembered after he died in March when a wrong way driver struck his police cruiser.
Kotfila’s father is a State police sergeant, and former Falmouth police officer. His brother is currently a Falmouth officer.
Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings said police officers are always putting their lives on the line.
“They go knowing there is always a chance, even the most benign sounding call will end badly,” he said. “So today we salute the police and other police officers in uniform who rightfully take their place at the head of our long blue line.”
