Falmouth’s ‘Route 28 Improvement Project’ To Move Forward

FALMOUTH- Falmouth’s ‘Main Street Corridor Project’ is now one step closer to reality after selectmen approved a motion to renovate from Palmer Ave. to Sandwich Road, then from Sandwich Road to Oxbow Road.

“We have received a letter from the State indicating our official eligibility for up to $10 million dollars for the corridor project, and that authorizes us to move forward,” said Raymond Jack, DPW Director for Falmouth.

‘Phase 1’ of the project will run from Palmer Avenue to Falmouth Heights Road, and will consist of minimal improvements, including addressing a traffic light issue adjacent to the fire rescue station on Main Street.

Phases ‘2’ and ‘3’ running from Falmouth Heights Road to Sandwich Road, then to Oxbow Road which are mainly state owned, will consist of repaving the roadway surfaces, installing a roundabout at Falmouth Heights Road, and widening the road in Teaticket.

In an effort to make the project move forward in a more efficient manner, the Board of Selectmen have voted to create a 9 member ‘Route 28 Citizen Committee Advisory Panel’ that would focus rectifying potential stumbling blocks created by the Sandwich to Oxbow Rd. section of the project.

The panel would be comprised of one representative each from the Falmouth Planning Board, the Bikeways Committee and the Commission on Disabilities.

In addition, there will also be six members at-large from the community alongside State Representative David T. Vieira (R-East Falmouth) acting as a non-voting, ex officio member.

In terms of a proposed ‘ground-break day’ Jack said, “We would be going in for the year 2024.”

In addition, there has been some confusion among residents that the ‘Route 28 Water Main Project’ and the ‘Route 28 Transportation project’ are directly connected, which they are not.

The water main project is expected to wrap up in Fall of 2020.
