FALMOUTH – A plan to install an elevated boardwalk, walking trail, informational kiosk, and bog bridges at the Two Ponds conservation area has been approved by Falmouth Selectmen.
The plan for the work at the site of the former Woodbriar Golf Course was initiated by the 300 Committee, who have been lobbying Falmouth Selectmen for the changes.
The land was donated to the land trust by Atria, encompassing nearly 15 acres of land and access to Jones Pond and Sols Pond.
Executive Director of the 300 Committee Jessica Whritenour says that the goal of the project is to open up access to the conservation area.
“We want to enhance and expand the handicap accessibility for certain, by establishing an additional trail that’s 400-feet long and a boardwalk that’s 360-feet long, adding a significant amount of handicap accessibility. There will be a wetland loop trail as well,” Whritenour said.
Plans call for a 400-foot long wheelchair-accessible trail, a 300-foot boardwalk over Jones Pond, and a scenic overlook near where the eighth hole used to be. This overlook would also be handicap accessible.
“A very simple trail system had been installed by Atria before the land gift. The existing trail is almost 400-feet long, so it does provide some access into the property, its wheelchair accessible, so residents of Atria and folks visiting in wheelchairs can get out to a viewing area looking out over the two ponds. But the access, I’d say, is quite limited,” said Whritenour.
Two selectmen attempted to recuse themselves from the discussion.
Despite already the general contractor for the project, Selectman Douglas Brown recused himself from formal talks surrounding the work. Selectman Samuel Patterson, who lives just 300-feet away from the conservation area, recused himself as an abutter.
