FALMOUTH – Falmouth Selectmen are calling on the state to conduct an environmental review of a third boat slip at the Woods Hole Steamship Authority Terminal before the project starts.

Town officials are concerned that the addition of another slip would increase the number of passengers and freight traffic through the town, as well as cause an increase in pollution and other health risks.

“I’m suggesting that we ask, as in any environmental review, what that environmental impact would be on the roads, on the trees, on the environment of the entire town after you would have increased traffic coming through,” said Selectman Doug Jones.

Jones added that he was not satisfied with the state’s impact review on Great Harbor.

He said he is worried about the negative consequences a potential third slip could bring to the town.

“My issue isn’t what’s happening. It’s what we’re creating the potential to have happen,” said Jones. “What have we now set as a possible byproduct of this happening?”

The third slip is part of the revamping of the Woods Hole terminal that includes plans to build a new terminal, piers, bulkhead and moving offsite administrative functions.

The Steamship Authority has said that the third slip would only be used as an alternative to docking in inclement weather or for back-up berthing.
