Falmouth to See $308K Reduction in Payment in Lieu of Taxes from State

FALMOUTH – After a re-evaluation of property values, the state’s payment in lieu of taxes to the town of Falmouth will soon be decreasing.

The payments are made by the state to reimburse communities for tax revenues lost on tax-exempt state-owned land.

Plymouth and Barnstable State Senator Vinny deMacedo recently discussed the issue with selectmen and said the Department of Revenue re-evaluates the properties every four years.

“That’s in fact what’s happened here in the town of Falmouth,” deMacedo said.

“They re-evaluated the properties and some communities increased in value because of the analysis they did and some decreased.”

The re-evaluation resulted in a reduction of more than $308,000 for Falmouth.

DeMacedo said a line item in the state budget for payments in lieu of taxes was increased from $26 million to $27.8 million for one year to give communities impacted a year to prepare for the loss in revenue.

“The town of Falmouth will be held harmless for this year,” he said.

“That being said, the bad news is it won’t be in perpetuity because there has been the changes and unless of course we continue to make the case that we should be putting more money in that line item it will adjust backwards.”
