FALMOUTH – A Falmouth veteran is seeking to return a missing ring to another veteran.

Rich Sherman found a United States Marines ring in the parking lot of Kappy’s Fine Wine & Spirits in Falmouth on Saturday.

“I looked down in the parking lot and this bright light sparkled up from the ground – a gold and a red,” Sherman said. “I looked down and it was clearly a piece of jewelry.”

Sherman could immediately tell from the logo that it was a U.S. Marine Corps ring.

“I know it has got to be very precious to someone,” he said.

Sherman immediately posted a photo of the ring on Facebook in an effort to locate the owner, and it was shared more than 2,000 times in 24 hours.

“So far we haven’t found the owner and we remain hopeful that we will, but so far – no luck,” Sherman said.

Sherman said it is important to return the ring to its rightful owner.

“Among Marines, their pride in what they did and where they served is paramount as well as supporting each other and that is what I am doing as a Navy guy,” he said.

Sherman said he knows what it means to have mementos from a veteran’s time in service.

The ring does include a distinct inscription on the inside that an owner would know.

“We are not revealing what it is on the side of the ring and hopefully that will be the key, as long as the size,” Sherman said.

Sherman was going to have the ring sized Wednesday by a local jeweler and determine if it is 14 karat gold.

Sherman is a little disappointed and surprised that the owner of the ring has not been found yet.

“We will keep pushing and keep trying. I won’t give up until we find the owner of this ring,” he said.

The Cape Cod Marine Corps Birthday Ball was held that evening at the Cape Codder Resort and Spa in Hyannis and was attended by more than 100 former U.S. Marines.

“Perhaps someone was visiting from out of town and before they stopped at Kappy’s and possibly dropped it,” Sherman said. “Whether it is directly related is anyone’s guess.”

There was also an announcement about the missing ring at the Veterans Day ceremony in Falmouth on Monday and at the Veterans luncheon at the Flying Bridge Restaurant.

“We are really trying hard to spread the word and we have done that, but still no luck,” Sherman said.

Individuals who may know the owner and have any information, or the owner of the ring can contact Sherman by emailing [email protected].
