FALMOUTH – Dozens of registered nurses with the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod – Falmouth have officially joined the largest nurses’ union in the state.

Eighty-six nurses joined the Massachusetts Nurses Association/National Nurses United last week.

The MNA represents more than 23,000 nurses and health care professionals across the state and now represents 1,126 registered nurses at health care facilities throughout Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

“We are very excited to join the MNA,” said Helene Solomon-Smith, an RN at Falmouth VNA, in a release. “This is a win for our patients and our nurses. When nurses have a real, independent voice in the care they provide it benefits everyone.”

The nurses began the process of organizing with the MNA in December of 2014 after expressing dissatisfaction with the way Cape Cod Healthcare was treating registered nurses and the impact it was having on patient care.

The issues sited include multiple patient re-assignments during one shift and excessive registered nurse patient assignments.

Members voted to join the union in November but election results were held up due to challenged votes. The National Labor Relations Board, which conducted the election, ruled in favor of the nurses joining the union on April 4.
