Falmouth Voters Approve Municipal Budget, Other Spending

FALMOUTH -Falmouth voters approved the town’s operating budget of $136,365,398 at town meeting last night where residents made it through 36 of the 44 articles on the warrant.

Officials were also given permission to hire four new police officers and two new fire fighters, the positions are needed, according to Town Manager Julian Suso, as the town continues to see fallout from the opioid crisis.

Members also did away with a 2003 requirement that capped the age for new police officers at 32.

Much of the attention at the meeting fell on the issue of accessory dwellings, voters agreed to lower the lot requirements for those dwellings from 7,500 square feet to 7,000 as long as the property was served by the sewer system.

Also approved were spending articles which included $310,000 for new athletic facilities at the Lawrence School, $300,000 for a Habitat for Humanity project on Barrows Road, $68,000 for water supplies at municipal recreational areas and $94,000 for improved accessibility at Highfield Hall and Harmony Path.

Falmouth Town Meeting continues tonight at the Lawrence school at 7.
