Falmouth Increases Legal Age to Buy Tobacco

France Introduce Smoking Ban In Public PlacesFALMOUTH – Falmouth has become the latest town to raise the minimum purchase age of tobacco and other nicotine products from 18 to 21.

The board made the decision a few weeks after a public hearing was held for the community to comment on the proposed change.

Board of Health Chairman Dr. Jared Goldstone says several studies outline the need to raise the minimum purchase age.

“The vast majority, 90 to 95 percent, of smokers started smoking before the age of 21,” Goldstone said.

He said reducing the number of smokers will protect public health.

“Nicotine is an extraordinarily addictive drug and if we can stop people from being addicted to it early then they don’t get addicted to it at all,” Goldstone said.

The board passed the regulation last week amid concerns from business owners who believe they will lose sales to stores in neighboring towns.

“At their request, we continued the hearing for two weeks and contacted the neighboring towns and Mashpee, I believe is considering their tobacco regulations [this] week,” he said.

Bourne postponed a vote to raise the minimum purchase age to 21.

The regulation passed in Falmouth also includes the sale of “vaping” devices like e-cigarettes.

Falmouth joins Yarmouth, Brewster and Eastham as towns on the Cape to raise the purchase age to 21.

The regulation will take effect 45 days after a public notice is issued which Goldstone expects to be this done this week in the local paper.

State health officials are considering raising the minimum purchase age to 21 statewide.
