Family Film Festival to Offer Alternatives for Children

cape cod family film festivalSOUTH YARMOUTH – The first Cape Cod Family & Youth Film Festival kicks off Sunday at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth.

The event, which is organized by the Cape Cod Film Society, is designed to introduce and develop an appreciation for film as an art form and movies as a social activity.

The film society’s founder Rebecca Alvin said it is important for families to recognize the unique experience of going to the movies and at the same time encourage independent films makers to explore creating content for children.

“There seems to be a limited range of types of films that are available for children and families to enjoy,” Alvin said.

She said there needs to be an alternative to Disney and Pixar movies.

The festival gets underway on Sunday with Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times” from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Independent and international films are the focus on Monday afternoon.

Starting at 1 p.m., three international short films will be screened from Iran, Australia and Spain including one about a boy who only wants a Play Station 4 for his birthday.

The shorts will be followed by the feature “The Incredible Adventures of Jojo (and his annoying little sister Avila),” which Alvin describes as a B-movie for children.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and can be purchased at the door or online at capecodfilmsociety.com.
