HARWICH – The Family Pantry of Cape Cod is going mobile.

The Harwich non-profit that provides food and clothing to those in need will now shuttle food in its recently acquired refrigerated truck to local senior centers for clients who can’t make it to the pantry on Queen Anne Road.

The Healthy Foods to Go program has partnered with the Chatham Council on Aging and launches on September 21.

“A person can register to be part of the pantry. They will give a shopping list of what they would like to have,” said Christine Menard, the Family Pantry’s executive director. “We then have volunteers that will put their order together and we will deliver it to the council on aging.”

The program will expand the non-profit’s services to Lower Cape towns that are classified as still in need as food insecure.

Food insecure individuals, as defined by Feeding America, are those who are not able to get access to one meal per day.

Through Feeding America’s Map the Meal program, the pantry identified the towns of Chatham, Brewster, Eastham and Provincetown.

“If you think about Provincetown, that’s an area that has very low access to transportation to come up here and the jobs dry up in the winter,” Menard said. “So we think this will be a great advantage to have for us to be able to go down there versus them trying to get all the way up to Harwich.”

The refrigerated truck will make trips to the Chatham Council on Aging on the third Wednesday of each month. Clients must register in advance by contacting the council on aging.

Pre-registration for the program in Chatham starts Septmeber 7.

There are 19 volunteers who have signed up to work with the Healthy Foods to Go program including four drivers.

“We’ll have a team of people here that pack the groceries. We’ll have a team of people that go to the actual site. We’ll have drivers that will take us all to the site,” Menard said. “And then we will partner with the site itself for their volunteers to help.”
