WEST HARWICH – The Family Pantry of Cape Cod has opened a new and expanded Second Glance thrift shop on Route 28 in West Harwich.

The revenues generated from the shop help to fund the non-profits efforts to provide food and clothing for those in need.

“This has become a really strong revenue stream for the pantry,” said Mary Anderson, the executive director of the Family Pantry of Cape Cod. “We were looking for a couple of years for a place to relocate.”

Anderson said the thrift shop accounted for about 20 percent of the pantry’s revenues last year.

“Over a couple of years we are hoping to double our revenue from the thrift shop and provide even more meals,” she said.

Every dollar the shop makes can provide four meals for the pantry’s clients.

The new location is about 5,400 square feet which is about three times larger than the previous store in Harwich Port.

“It’s allowed us to get into the furniture line of business,” Anderson said.

The shop also sells men’s and women’s clothing, jewelry, books and small household items.

The shop does not sell children’s clothing because those donations are saved for clients.

The pantry still relies heavily on donations but Anderson said they have always tried to “self help,” which is working to make their own money.

“The thrift shop has become the most successful of those venues,” Anderson said.

The pantry also collects bottle and cans with a 5 cent deposit.

Anderson said the driving force behind the move was the building that housed the previous Second Chance location was being torn down.
