WASHINGTON – NOAA has awarded more than $2,000,000 in total to various organizations to study bycatch reduction programs, and two organizations in the Commonwealth have been awarded money.
The Mass Department of Marine Fisheries will receive funding to develop a bycatch avoidance tool for cod in the Gulf of Maine recreational fishery.
Also the New England Aquarium received funding to study lowering the mortality rate for sandbar sharks after they’ve been rescued. In addition the aquarium is testing a ropeless fishing prototype for eliminating large whale entanglements in pot fishing gear.
Other federal funding was spread around the country, including for projects in Hawaii and Alaska.
