CHATHAM – The U-S Fish and Wildlife Service released its final comprehensive conservation plan Wednesday for the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, asserting control of the waters and submerged lands to the west of Monomoy.
Chatham officials have been fighting that aspect of the plan for more than a year.
A statement released Wednesday night from Selectmen Chairman Jeffrey Dykens said they will be meeting with Attorney General Maura Healey’s office in the coming days to determine possible remedies.
Chatham argued that the town has properly managed the area around Monomoy for decades, and that the federal government should not have control.
A statement from the federal government said the plan was approved after “careful consideration” was given to comments made by local residents and officials.
The Fish and Wildlife Service said they made substantive changes in their initial plan based on many of those comments.
The statement from Dykens said that throughout the entire process, not a single federal official ever questioned Chatham’s environmental stewardship of their shared natural resources.
