FALMOUTH – Dylan Fernandes won a five-way race for the Democratic nomination in the Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket District Thursday, paving the way for the Falmouth resident to replace the retiring Tim Madden (D-Nantucket).
Barring a successful third party or write-in campaign, Fernandes will represent the district on Beacon Hill. There are no Republican candidates in the general election. There are two third party candidates.
Fernandes’ closest competitor was T. Ewell Hopkins, a member of the Oak Bluffs planning board. As of early Friday morning, Fernandes garnered 3,075 votes, 1,853 coming from Falmouth. Hopkins was the leading vote getter on Martha’s Vineyard.
Jessica Lambert, Michael Heylin, and Timothy Soverino also ran.
