Ferry from New Bedford to Nantucket to be Considered by Steamship Authority

FerryNEW BEDFORD – A twice-daily ferry service from New Bedford to Nantucket could return to local waters in the spring.

Officials with the Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority say SeaStreak LLC made an appeal to run the route, which hasn’t been made in over 50 years.

New Bedford Operations Manager for SeaStreak John Silvia said the twice-daily route would make one stop in Oak Bluffs.

“It would mean bringing back a vessel that was actually built for the steamship authority docks,” Silvia said.

He said that New Bedford ferries have continually received sustainable patronage, even during a rough economy.

Day trips would be a possibility, he said, using what the company calls an “adventure pass.”

Silvia said the Authority has remained neutral so far, as they weigh the decision.

If approved, the service could begin on May 27th, 2016, Silvia said.
