Firefighter Collapses at Scene of House Fire and Later Dies

WATERTOWN, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say a firefighter collapsed while responding to a house fire in Massachusetts and died at a hospital.

Police Chief Michael Lawn says the firefighter appears to have suffered a heart attack Friday. He collapsed at the scene of the morning blaze in Watertown and died at a Cambridge hospital.

Lawn says the death is under investigation. Officials haven’t yet released the name of the firefighter.

Fire officials are also still investigating the cause of the fire. Lawn says two people were evacuated from the single family house.

A witness says a woman wearing a robe and with black soot all over her face exited the home, then tried to go back inside with an extinguisher.

The state fire marshal’s spokeswoman tells the Boston Globe that one resident was injured.
