First Dennis Senior Citizens Police Academy Graduates 36

Police CarDENNIS – The Dennis Police Department graduated 36 participants in their first Senior Citizens Police Academy earlier this month.

The five-week program wrapped up on December 9.

Participants were instructed by department members in criminal law, crime prevention and traffic laws.

Dennis Police Community Services Officer Nicholas Patsavos organized the academy and said it was a success.

“It was terrific. The feedback we got from the citizens was they absolutely loved the class,” he said.

He said the problem of elder scams was a major reason for the class.

“It has been my primary focus as a law enforcement officer to prevent elder scams in the Town of Dennis and that was a major focus of this academy,” he said.

He said that since the students were senior citizens, there was a concentration on what people can do to prevent fraud, particularly on the frequent scam of phone calls from criminals pretending to be family members who ask for bank account information on the phone.

Patsavos said his advice is clear.

“Do not talk to anyone on the phone unless you know who you are talking to. That’s the most important piece of advice I can give,” he said.

The department will also be hosting a winter driving class in January at the Dennis Senior Center.

The department’s regular Citizens Police Academy will be a 10-week session open to all adults beginning in April.
