After arriving in Hyannis for the first time this summer, a JetBlue plane gets ready to depart for JFK airport in New York.

HYANNIS – The first JetBlue flight of the season from JFK airport in New York landed at Barnstable Municipal Airport Thursday afternoon.

Airport commissioner Mary Smith said there was only one seat open on the flight and hopes the service does even better in its second year.

“We are hoping that it will be even better and surpass as good as it was last year,” she said. “Last year it exceeded [JetBlue’s] expectations and we hope they will be exceeded again this year.”

Brooklyn resident Daniel Meretzky flew to the Cape to attend a wedding in Chatham this weekend and said the JetBlue service is convenient.

“I would be taking a 10 hour bus ride otherwise which would probably cost even more,” he said.

Billy Dailey, of Beaufort, S.C., is spending a few days with his grandparents in Eastham before heading to New Hampshire.

Dailey said it was surprising to find out he was on the first flight of the season and didn’t expect to see media when he landed.

Smith said the service is great for Cape Cod and hopes JetBlue extends the service outside of the summer months.

“It opens up Cape Cod to the world and the world to Cape Cod,” she said. “Because you can go anywhere from JFK and it’s a wonderful opportunity.”

More than 12,000 passengers used the service last summer during the 11 week period of flights.

The service started a week earlier this year and runs through Labor Day.
