First Look at Barnstable School District Fiscal Year 2019 Budget

HYANNIS – The Barnstable School District fiscal year 2019 school budget was reviewed recently for the first time by the Barnstable School Committee and the District Leadership Council.

Deputy Finance Director Gareth Markwell presented the budget, where the total appropriations projected are at over $69 million.

Around $2.9 million in requests were received by Markwell from all schools and departments.

“We are budgeting just over $1.8 million in special education circuit breaker revenue, that is money that we will bank during FY18 and utilize in FY19,” said Markwell.

A number of steps still need to be completed in the budget process, including reviewing the current year for other funds, looking for special revenue funds and looking at submissions.

“We will put a placeholder in there of $225,000 to offset transportation costs in the district and then we’ll utilize $700,000 in school choice tuition for a total budget of $70,016,620,” said Markwell.

The proposed 2019 school district budget is an increase of nearly $2.1 million over the current budget.

A public hearing will be held on March 21st on the budget in the Town Hall Hearing Room.

Once it is adopted by the committee, it then go to the Town Manager and Town Council to be voted on in June.

All of the budget information for prior years and the FY2019 budget development is available online at the Town of Barnstable and school district websites.
