BARNSTABLE – Disney has released the trailer for their upcoming film, “The Finest Hours,” which is based on the true story of a 1952 winter Coast Guard Rescue off the coast of Chatham during a nor’easter.

The movie was adapted from the book of the same name which was co-authored by Michael Tougias and Casey Sherman.

Sherman said he was happy to see what Disney had done with the story.

“It was exactly how Mike Tougias and I had envisioned the story when we wrote it,” Sherman said. “And watching it, I’m going back to the entire journey of five to six years of writing the book and getting this movie made.”

Sherman said it was incredibly emotional the first time he watched the trailer.

“I was really wondering how I would feel and watching it all unfold in two and a half minutes was surreal for me,” he said.

The trailer has also received a lot of attention online.

“The overwhelming response to the trailer has really been amazing. It’s received over 600,000 views in less than 24 hours,” he said. “Every website in the world it seems, from an entertainment perspective, has talked glowingly about the trailer and about the movie.”

The film tells the story of a Coast Guard crew based out of Chatham that attempts to rescue the crew members of a pair of oil tankers that are destroyed during a severe winter storm in the early morning hours of February 18,1952.

Sherman said he believes moviegoers will come out of the theatre in January feeling inspired.

“I think they are going to realize that superheroes do exist,” he said. “They don’t wear capes and tights. They wear hand-me-down foul weather gear and galoshes.”

Filming for the movie took place in Quincy, Marshfield, Cohasset and on the Cape in Chatham.

“The Finest Hours” is set for a January 29, 2016 release and stars Chris Pine, Casey Affleck, Holliday Grainger, Ben Foster and Eric Bana.
