Fishermen Get Special Permit

fishing boatCHATHAM – The National Marine Fisheries Service has granted an Exempted Fishing Permit to the Cape Cod Fishermen’s Alliance, which will allow 14 vessels to possess and land barndoor skate.

The aim is to collect data on the fish in order to better determine skate catch composition and the fish’s population impact on the fishery.

John Bullard, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said this is exactly the type of research his agency wants to support, saying the expertise of  local fishermen will go a long way in better determining the fish stock and getting the best price for U.S. caught seafood.

Skates are harvested for their mild fillets, which are commonly found on restaurant menus, the barndoor skate fishery has been closed for many years to allow the population to recover.
