HYANNIS – The New England Fisheries Management Council is meeting in Hyannis this week and one of the pressing issues on the agenda is the dwindling cod population.
The Gulf of Maine Fishery spans waters from Provincetown to Canada.
Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance Policy Director Tom Dempsey says the latest cod numbers are not good.
“In the last few months we’ve gotten an updated scientific estimate of that population and it’s estimated to be about two percent of our target market,” he said.
Dempsey says a vote today calling for a moratorium on cod fishing will likely take place. If it is passed, the recommendation would be sent on to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce for consideration.
