Fishing Rule Changes Considered

WASHINGTON –  NOAA Fisheries has opened the comment period on commercial Accountability Measure Modifications, the Agency announced this week.

Changes are being considered to summer flounder, scup and black seabass fisheries with regard to overages caused by discards.

As a result of these proposed measures, automatic pound for pound paybacks due to annual catch limit overages resulting from higher than expected discard estimates would not be required in all situations., depending on the level of the overages and the status of the stock.

These adjustments are similar to those implemented for the accountability measures in the recreational fisheries managed by the Mid Atlantic Fishery Management Council in 2013 .

The full proposed rule can be found in the Federal Register, the comment period runs through September 10th.

You can submit comments through the Agency’s online portal.
