BREWSTER – Brewster Ponds Coalition will offer a unique event Saturday which will allow families to explore how septic systems effect local water systems.
Coalition president Karen-Malkus Benjamin says a giant model septic system will allow kids to get “flushed.”
“We really wanted to show how everyone’s impact on the ponds is important, and children are a great way to spread that information,” Benjamin said. “Here’s a way you can understand something that’s usually out of sight.”
The “Flush Your Kids” event is part of a yearly hyperlocal awareness effort known as Brewster Conservation Day.
Pond Testers will be present throughout the event, demonstrating pond testing gear and showing how residents can take part in water quality testing.
Benjamin said the day is an opportunity to explore how important it is to regularly maintain septic systems.
“Everyone in town has a septic, so we’re trying to enlighten in a fun way,” she said. “It’s really kind of a festive moment to have your kid flushed down a toilet.”
The event takes place Saturday, July 11 at 9:30 a.m. in Drummer Boy Park on Route 6A in Brewster.
“We’ll be flushing rain or shine,” Benjamin said.
