Flushed And Repainted Hydrants Coming To Falmouth

FALMOUTH – This year’s portion of flushing and repainting every fire hydrant in Falmouth is expected to be finished by October.

Flushing should conclude by Memorial Day.

Water Department superintendent Stephen Rafferty said the volume of available water should not be a concern.

“There is a little bit of an issue in that we have a water resource management act permit.  We’re only allowed to take so much water a year out of Long Pond because of how full it is.  We’ll be bumping up against that this year a little bit.  I think we can work our way around that for good reasons,” he said.

With the town’s water treatment plant now online, the flushing of around 3,000 hydrants should be completed on schedule.

Rafferty points out that the public will be kept in the loop.

“We will be putting up electronic billboards to warn people that this flushing program will be ongoing, and we will, on a day by day basis, update on the web page for the water department where the flushing will be occurring,” he said.

The repainting of 900 hydrants will take much longer because only eight to twelve can be done per day, and only when the weather is dry.  This part of the project will be done in segments which will last into 2020.
