Fluzone Shots Sold Out in Barnstable County

BARNSTABLE – The Barnstable County Health Department’s stock of the Fluzone shot, a high-dose vaccine for senior citizens to combat against the flu, was quickly sold out.

County Nurse Deirdre Arvidson said the effectiveness of the shot which could explain why the supply went so quickly.

“It helps their immune system to produce antibodies when the immune system, as you age, does become less effective,” Arvidson said.

The department says all people should receive regular flu shots, but those who are elderly may benefit from the high-dose Fluzone injection.

Currently, Arvidson is anticipating a new stock of Fluzone shots to be available in two to three weeks, although she is working with the rest of the department to get a new shipment in as soon as possible.

“It is in high demand,” she continued.

“I think the manufacturers need to keep that in mind; that when you send out advertising. You need to make sure you have enough for everybody.”

Those who wish to receive the Fluzone vaccine can be put on a wait list. The Barnstable County Health Department will take names and call residents back when the shot is available again.

The department may be reached at 508-375-6617. For more information, visit www.barnstablecountyhealth.org.
