Following Bitter Cold Temps, Area Polar Plunges Called Off

CAPE COD – The region’s recent brutal cold snap has taken its toll on a number of local events planned for New Year’s Day.

The Yarmouth Police Department has announced the given more than a week of consistent sub-freezing temperatures they will be postponing Monday’s 8th annual Polar Plunge at Smugglers Beach until January 21st.

The annual New Year’s Day Splash at Barnstable Harbor is also being moved until sometime this February and, citing the cold, officials planning Provincetown’s Polar Bear Plunge have cancelled that event entirely.

The Mashpee Polar Bear Club’s annual “Freezin’ for a Reason” swim fundraiser has been amended to a “Drive up to Donate” event, where participants can simply drive their vehicle to Loop Beach and Cotuit to fork over a donation. This year funds are benefiting the family of Mike Pimentel, who is undergoing treatment for cancer.

Polar Plungers are being cautioned that jumping into the ocean this particular New Year’s Day is crazier than usual, so be on the lookout for further cancellations.
