HYANNIS – A winter storm that could deliver 1-to-2 feet of snow to the Mid-Atlantic states is expected to have an impact on the Cape and Islands by Saturday afternoon, but snowfall totals for the region remain uncertain.
The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center warns of heavy, “perhaps crippling” snow across the northern mid-Atlantic region, including Baltimore, Washington and Philadelphia.
The latest guidance from the National Weather Service office in Taunton has the storm slowing down, with snow holding off until Saturday morning or afternoon. The northern edge of the heavy snow shield may set up over or near Southern New England.
Northeast winds up to 50 mph are possible late Saturday into Sunday with the strongest winds over Cape Cod and the Islands.
Those winds may cause scattered power outages due to downed limbs.
High astronomical tides will combine with strong onshore Northeast winds to yield a risk for minor and perhaps moderate coastal flooding along the coast.
The most vulnerable tide cycle appears to be late Sunday morning to midday.
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency in Framingham is operating at Level 1 (Steady State Monitoring). MEMA said they will continue to monitor the forecast and be in communication with the National Weather Service.
Further south, blizzard and winter storm watches for parts of Maryland, Washington, Virginia and West Virginia were issued by the National Weather Service.
Center Meteorologist Rich Otto says the bigger cities could get 1 to 2 feet of snow, but first, the storm will bring ice and freezing rain to Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas starting Thursday.
As the storm moves east Friday, it will bring snow and then will affect Philadelphia and New York City as it moves north.
