BARNSTABLE – A Marstons Mills woman who is accused of stealing prescription medications from the renters in a home she owns was in Barnstable District Court Friday for a pretrial hearing.

Melanie Powers, a former chief financial officer for the Woods Hole Research Center and International Fund for Animal Welfare, is accused of five counts of larceny of drugs.

She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police believe the thefts took place over several months earlier this year.

In court, Powers’ attorney Peter Lloyd told Judge John Julian that his client is undergoing treatment at Gosnold Cape Cod, a substance abuse treatment facility in Falmouth.

He filed motions for her to participate in a drug diversion program, which allows addicts to undergo treatment and monitoring instead of serving time in jail.

A pretrial hearing has been scheduled for August 6.
