BOSTON (AP) — Former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the state’s winner-take-all system for presidential elections.
MassLive.com reports the lawsuit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Boston as part of a nationwide effort to change how the United States chooses its president.
Similar lawsuits have been filed in California, Texas and South Carolina.
The lawsuit alleges states which give all their electoral votes to the candidate receiving the most votes in the general election are disenfranchising supporters of losing candidates. The lawsuit alleges that is unconstitutional.
Weld and his colleagues support proportional voting in which electoral votes are allocated based on the percentage each candidate receives in the election.
They say that would ensure candidates who lose the popular vote don’t win the presidential election.
