Former White House Aid to Challenge for 2nd Barnstable State Rep Seat

HYANNIS – An Osterville shellfisherman has formally entered the race for the 2nd Barnstable District State Representative seat.

Democrat Paul Cusack, 46, will challenge incumbent Republican Will Crocker, who is finishing his first term in office.

Cusack also served as an aide to former Vice President Al Gore and completed four tours in Afghanistan as an Army Ranger, along with working in several non-profit leadership positions.

“I think there is a really great opportunity to represent some folks around here who aren’t particularly feeling well represented,” Cusack said.

Cusack said he has jumped into the campaign and recently got started over the last few weeks.

“It’s pretty exciting,” he said.

Cusack said as a state representative you can get to know people well at the local level and hopes he can have a direct impact on issues that people in the region hold dear.

“My ears are wide open and my calendar is open too,” he said. “I’m spending time with folks hearing directly from them in their kitchen or in their yard.”

Cusack said the economy, the environment and the opioid crisis are issues that are discussed quite frequently in the region.

“I think there is a real chance to bring new voices into that conversation and innovate towards better solutions,” he said.

Cusack has also worked in several non-profit leadership positions, including renewable energy development, higher education, and the internet in political practices.

He also spent time working on gang intervention and gang prevention programs in some of the more challenged neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles.
