Forums to be Held on Chatham Accessory Dwelling Unit Bylaw

CHATHAM – Chatham planning board members are looking for feedback from the public on a revised accessory dwelling unit (ADU) zoning bylaw amendment.

An earlier draft of the bylaw was seen by many as being too permissive as it allowed more than one dwelling unit on a property, but town officials say that the new amendment addresses those issues and voids some of the potential undesired impacts.

The bylaw allows for year-round apartments in single-family homes with no affordability restrictions, which is meant to help families meet the high cost of housing, help seniors stay in their homes longer, and increases attainable housing.

The amendment also requires that properties comply with all Board of Health and wastewater regulations, including bedroom limitations.

ADUs must be occupied on a year-round basis, and not rented daily, weekly, monthly, according to the draft.

After the forums, the planning board will go over the comments and feedback and put them into a final draft that will go before selectmen in advance of town meeting.

To see the draft bylaw, go to the planning board page on the town’s website.

The forums will be held on Tuesday, November 27th at 5pm at the Chatham Town Hall Annex and on Saturday, December 1st at 9:30am at the Chatham Community Center.
