Free Centerville Conference Scheduled For Dementia Caregivers

CENTERVILLE – The Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod, which provides free services to families dealing with any dementia disease, has announced its first annual conference.

It’s called “A Positive Approach to Person Centered Dementia Care” and will  address ways of communicating and interacting with people who are suffering from cognitive loss.

Nationally renowned dementia care expert Teepa Snow will be featured.

The daylong event, which will place on April 27th in Centerville at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, is free.

“These conferences tend to be cost prohibitive for those who most need to attend them, such as certified nursing assistants.  Those people who are really the boots on the ground are also the lowest paid people on the totem pole,” said Cultural Director Melanie Braverman.

The day is open to both professionals and lay people, and can provide continuing education credits.

Lunch will be served and Greg O’Brien, a Cape Cod author suffering from Alzheimer’s, will do a reading.

A caregiver from Brewster explains that “A diagnosis of dementia is overwhelming, but having the resources, education and support has really cleared a path for us.”

Braverman is also excited about another upcoming event.   “We have a brunch and a walk coming up.  It’s going to be a kind of big Alzheimer’s carnival event.  There’ll be walking, running, and a dance floor with a big band.  This is how we fund all of these free events.”

The response to the conference has been so enthusiastic, that next years is already in the planning stage.

The Alzheimer’s Family Support Center was created by caregivers to provide free support services for the Alzheimer’s/dementia community on Cape Cod.
