SOUTH DENNIS – A small group of kids from New York City are spending the next couple of weeks on the Cape.
They arrived by bus in South Dennis last week and will be spending their trip with host families in Nantucket, Dennis Port, Marstons Mills, South Yarmouth and Hyannis.
The children, who are between the ages of seven and 18, are coming to the Cape for the first time, but some return each summer to visit the same host families every year.
“These kids don’t see water and trees and grass a lot so it’s pretty exciting for them when they get here,” said Debra Burns, chairwoman for Fresh Air Kids of the Lower Cape.
Burns became a host parent for the children 10 years ago, when she thought it would be a great experience for her son.
“I wanted him to experience something and see another side of life, and also to feel the compassion that these host families give to these children that come here,” said Burns.
The Fresh Air Fund is a non-profit agency that has provided free summer experiences to over 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877.
Each summer, nearly 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in cities and towns along the East Coast.
