WELLFLEET – Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is hosting a number of programs during the fall season.

On Saturdays until November 11, take part in “Bird Research in Action”.

See how and why researchers band birds during migration periods.

The program offers a special opportunity to get close views of songbirds that can be difficult to see in the wild, many of them passing through Wellfleet Bay on their way to distant southern wintering grounds.

On Saturday, September 30 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Mass Audubon’s Joan Walsh presents the latest findings on the status of Massachusetts’ breeding birds and how they will be impacted by climate change.

Joan, who oversaw the two previous State of the Birds of Massachusetts reports as well as the Breeding Bird Atlas 2, now holds the Bertrand Chair for Natural History and Field Ornithology at Mass Audubon.

On Saturday, October 7 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. explore fascinating fungi in Wellfleet Bay.

Mushrooms and slime molds abound on the Outer Cape in late summer and fall and this program is your opportunity to learn a bit about what you’ve been seeing in your yard.

Dan McCullough of Mass Audubon’s Habitat Education Center in Belmont will start with an overview presentation and then lead a walk around Wellfleet Bay to hunt for the intriguing species that can be found here.
