Friends of Bass River Introduce New Executive Director

YARMOUTH – The Friends of Bass River introduced their new executive director yesterday morning in Yarmouth.

Brian Weiner will lead the nonprofit organization which launched last year to protect the ecosystem of the Bass River Estuarine System.

Weiner said the river is at great risk and taking over the leadership role for the organization is a great challenge.

“If you have been on the river, you see the river and even take the time to put your boat on the river you will find that the river is in trouble,” Weiner said. “It is in trouble from everything from heavy plant growth and weed growth to nitrogen and simple pollution in the river.”

Weiner will raise awareness of the environmental issues facing the river system to the public, towns, governments and civic groups, along with overseeing fundraising and creating a donor network and team of volunteers.

“It’s wonderful to have passionate founders. It’s much more important to have a large base of vocal supporters who are all heading in the same direction,” he said.

Weiner said the river touches many towns and encompasses the property and lives of many people and that not saving it would be a gigantic mistake.

“It would be as much of a signature for the Cape as the National Seashore has been on the positive side,” he said.

He has been actively engaged in the support and leadership of non-profit organizations since 1990. Weiner served as the president and COO of The KMS Companies in Woburn from 1992 until his retirement from the company in 2016. He built and led The One to One Group, a multi-city business in Sarasota, Florida, Raleigh, North Carolina and Boston dedicated to the support of non-profits.

He specializes in raising new donor dollars.

Weiner said he was looking for a new position that would put him back in the environment.

“I wanted to be involved, particularly, in an organization that would give me the chance to give back to a place that I love so much,” he said. “I’m a kayaker and I’ve been kayaking on that river really for 25 years and when that opportunity came along it was too good to be true.”

Weiner is an avid kayaker and photographer. He and his wife Kathleen have two adult daughters and are year-round residents of Harwich.
