Friends of Herring River Offering ‘Herring River Month’ Festivities

WELLFLEET – Thanks to a recent unanimous proclamation from Wellfleet selectmen, the month of May is now officially Herring River Month – and you’re being invited to celebrate.

Friends of Herring River has teamed with local experts to host special events that celebrate the River’s rich history and extensive natural resources and ecological value.

A series of three engaging presentations will be held at the Wellfleet Public Library, beginning at 6:30 PM.

On May 8th “Wellfleet Cooks – From River to Table in the 1800s: Cuisine and Recipes from the Herring River” will present recipes and a display of kitchen tools from the 1800s.

May 22nd “From the Upper Reaches of Herring Pond to Route 6” will be presented by Dr. Ethan Estey, Wellfleet Herring Warden.

And on May 30th “Rare and Elusive Marsh Birds of the Herring River”, a photographic overview of the estuary’s avian diversity, will be presented by Steve Broker, field naturalist and lifelong Wellfleet summer resident.

Celebrate Herring River Month will conclude on Saturday June 1st with a kayak paddle along the mouth of the Herring River, around Great Island, to Middle Meadow.
