Friends of Nobska Light to Restore Keeper’s House

WOODS HOLE – The Friends of Nobska Light, a group dedicated to restoring and repurposing Nobska lighthouse, is raising money to restore the watchtower’s keeper house.

The nonprofit organization completed full restoration of the lighthouse section of Nobska in 2018 and now will shift focus to restoring the old keeper’s house and turning it into a maritime museum.

“We did significant work on the lighthouse in the fall of 2017 and the spring of 2018 and it looks terrific and so now it was time to turn our focus to the keeper’s house,” said Catherine Bumpus, Executive Director for Friends of Nobska Light.

Renovations to the keeper’s house include new windows, siding, new supports for the floors, and improvements to handicapped accessibility.

The museum will have five rooms with rotating exhibits, some of which will explain the history of Nobska, the people who lived in the keeper’s house and the role of the coast Guard.

“We will be telling the stories of the people that lived here, of the maritime history of the area, and we will also have some rotating exhibit space,” she said.

The organization has already raised $1.5 million for the restoration project according to David Forsberg, co-chairman of the fundraising committee.

Part of the funding will go toward educational programs for youth at the museum with activities for children geared toward science and the storytelling of Nobska, as well as fun topics such as pirates.

“We want to appeal to people from Falmouth who care about the place, we want to make it an attraction to tourist…but the biggest focus is on kids,” Forsberg said.

“The story of Nobska is incredible, and I think it will be a shame for future generations to not know how special it was.”

Friends of Nobska Light are working with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in hopes that the school will support a maritime exhibit at the museum.

Formed in 2015, Friends of Nobska Light looks to preserves the lighthouse for future generations.
