Friends of Snow Library Hosting Three Classes on Sharks and Seals in April

ORLEANS – Following the two shark attacks off Cape Cod waters last summer, residents are educating themselves on shark and seal behavior in preparation for the upcoming summer season.

Three classes will be offered in April by the Friends of Snow Library, focusing on different aspects of the marine life that takes control of the seashore in the summer.

On April 6, Kiberly Murray will lead a presentation on seal research, including trends in gray and harbor seal abundance, their disease ecology, genetics, and predator/prey dynamics. Murray leads the Seal Ecology and Assessment Program at NOAA Northeast Fisheries Center in Woods Hole.

On April 12, Marianne Long will conduct a lecture on the movement, behavior and biology of the apex predator of the ocean, the Great White Shark. Long will also dive into how this research is effecting public safety and shark conservation efforts. Long currently studies sharks in their natural habitat and teaches classes for the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

Finally, on April 19, Orleans Fire Chief Anthony Pike will discuss the beach protection plan, as well as its training and assets, including the Stop the Bleed training programs taking place across the Lower Cape.

Each class will be held from 1:30 p.m. through 3:00 p.m. on their respective dates. A $10 donation at the door in lieu of an admission fee grants participants access to all three classes.
