Frigid Forecast Prompts Modifications to Cape Cod First Night Events

HYANNIS – A bone-chilling cold forecast for New Year’s Eve is prompting organizers of First Night celebrations on Cape Cod to make some schedule modifications for Sunday afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures to plunge near 5 degrees Sunday night, with wind chills around 12-below-zero.

Here are the current changes for each community holding events on Cape Cod and links to event pages.

 

SANDWICH:

Due to the extreme cold, First Night Sandwich has moved some of the outdoor attractions indoors.

The Fairy Garden   has been moved to the Sandwich Public Library lower level.

The FNS Button Sales Table    will be located inside Town Hall from 3 to 6:45 pm.

There will be no tent on the library lawn.

The Photo Booth   has been moved to Town Hall so go there to have your photo taken and get your memento of the night!

The Reveler’s Parade   will begin at Sandwich Library at 8:05 so please gather there to be part of the parade and from there it will go directly to the First Church to begin the finale celebration.

Sparkly, Fun Souvenirs   will be sold at the Library and St. Johns Church.

Joe Gallant   will be painting en plain aire in front of the Dan’l Webster braving the cold and creating a beautiful painting for sale.

The Finale   will begin immediately upon arrival at the First Church.

The Sparklers & Fireworks   will all begin at around 8:30 pm.

CHATHAM:

Two special activities have had to cancel due to the cold weather.

The Carousel Organ cannot operate in extreme cold. 

The Horse-drawn Wagon cannot bring its horses out in extreme cold, under animal safety laws. Both activities were scheduled for the area around the Town Hall.

PROVINCETOWN:

The Light Bright bike ride is cancelled due to frigid temps, and will be rescheduled for another warmer winter weekend.

Warming Stations:

The Provincetown Library will be open to everyone Saturday & Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.

Paramount at the Crown & Anchor will have a warm spot for everyone 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Monday January 1st, along with a First Light Foodcourt.

The Fireworks are still scheduled for 5:30pm on Monday, New Year’s Day!

POLAR PLUNGES:

The Polar Plunges scheduled for Cape Cod on January 1 have also been postponed because of the dangerously cold temperatures.

-Yarmouth’s 8th Annual Polar Plunge at Smuggler’s Beach has been moved to January 21st.

-The annual New Year’s Day Splash at Barnstable Harbor has been moved until sometime this February.

-Provincetown’s Polar Bear Plunge has been cancelled, but a Polar Bear Plunge Group photo will still be taken at the Johnson Street Parking lot at 12 p.m, followed by a Hot Chili Warm Up at the Harbor Lounge.

-The Mashpee Polar Bear Club’s annual “Freezin’ for a Reason” swim fundraiser has been amended to a “Drive up to Donate” event, where participants can simply drive their vehicle to Loop Beach in Cotuit and make a donation. This year funds are benefiting the family of Mike Pimentel, who is undergoing treatment for cancer.

-The Monument Beach Polar Plunge has been postponed until Janury 27th.
