From More Gambling to Legal Pot, Massachusetts Voters Weigh Ballot Issues

Israel Pioneers Use Of Medical MarijuanaBOSTON (AP) — With no statewide races on the ballot and Massachusetts considered safely in Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s column, much of the campaign conversation in the state has centered on four initiative petitions appearing on the state ballot Tuesday.

Voters are being asked to decide whether to legalize recreational marijuana, expand charter schools, ban the sale of food products from farms where animals are mistreated, and allow for consideration of a gambling slots parlor near Suffolk Downs.

Massachusetts is among five states weighing recreational pot and while recent polls showing support for a “yes” vote, the question has faced opposition from a number of top elected officials, as well as many doctors, business leaders and clergy.

Meanwhile, more money has been raised for and against the hotly debated charter school question than on any other ballot measure in state history.
