A standing-room-only crowd turned out to the Falmouth Selectmen’s meeting Monday night to show their opposition to the project to build a Marriott hotel on Main Street.

FALMOUTH – The controversial project to build a Marriott hotel on Main St. in Falmouth heads to the full Cape Cod Commission Thursday.

A commission subcommittee charged with reviewing the project took its final vote earlier this month with a 4-to-1 vote in favor.

The public will be allowed to comment at today’s meeting, where the commission could take a final vote.

Hundreds of Falmouth residents have attended commission hearings on the Marriott with many speaking and writing letters opposed to the project.

Opponents have said the hotel would bring an increase in traffic in an area of town that is already gridlocked and also that the large size and generic design of the building would negatively impact the community character of the village center.

Falmouth Selectmen voted Monday night to send a letter to the Cape Cod Commission saying they are against the project.

Selectmen took the unanimous vote in front of a standing-room-only crowd opposed to the 65,000-square-foot, 110-room hotel.
