Funding for New Senior Center in Chatham To Go Before Town Meeting

CHATHAM – Selectmen in Chatham have still not settled on a possible location for a new senior center, but it did not stop them from recommending a town meeting article that would fund planning expenses.

If approved, the article would appropriate $100,000 to fund a feasibility study, a conceptual design and an owner’s project manager.

“This would be contingent upon the location of a site to be determined by the Board of Selectmen,” said Terry Whelan, the town’s principal planner.

“This would provide the opportunity to continue to move forward with the project from a timing perspective, but still not give away the charge from selectmen wanting to have a site determined before going into the next step.”

Possible sites discussed for a new senior center include near the wastewater treatment center and the Little League field behind the community center.

The Finance committee recommends finding a location for a new center before continuing with any designs.

Town meeting is May 14.
