Future of Mashpee Commons to be Discussed with Public Again

MASHPEE – Over the next few months, Mashpee Commons by Design will conduct the next input phase to help plan the future of the mixed-use development.

A series of “Tuesday Talks” will bring together local, regional and national experts to discuss key themes and ideas which emerged from successful public visioning sessions held in November and December.

The previous public workshops attracted over 300 people resulting in hundreds of suggestions regarding the future of the commons.

“People were really enthusiastic about what they wanted to see, their love for the commons and what an important factor it plays in the local economy, the quality of life aspect and the town and region as a whole,” said Tony Simon, a Masphee Commons by Design spokesman.

Common themes were expressed during the visioning sessions, including a desire for more housing options, a need to address local infrastructure deficiencies and to create more public spaces.

Simon said they are excited to further gather input from residents.

“It’s really going to be an opportunity to drill down a little bit deeper on some of these themes that people want to talk about more and we are confident we’ll have a good turnout and there will be great discussions,” Simon said. “We’ll provide some great subject matter, experts as well, as a resource to the planning process to the town and to community members.”

The “Tuesday Talks” will begin March 6 at the Mashpee Commons Storefront on Market Street at 6 p.m. The focus of the first forum is housing on Cape Cod.

The second session is March 13 at 6 p.m. at the Mashpee Public Library. That session will focus on infrastructure, public space and systems planning.

Creating a stable economic base for Masphee will be the subject of the third session March 27. That talk will also be at 6 p.m. at the Mashpee Public Library.

The last session, also at the library at 6 p.m., on April 10 will discuss zoning needs.

Mashpee Commons is a multi-use development which includes retail, dining and residential spaces, along with public spaces and community events.

Mashpee Commons by Design was created as a way to engage the public to create concepts for the next phases of the development.
